Pag-amuma Ginhawa Initiatives

Building More Resilient and Sustainable Communities

The GRIPP Initiative

Guidance, Reconciliation, Integration, Prevention, and Progression

The GRIPP Initiative (Guidance, Reconciliation, Integration, Prevention, and Progression) of Barangay Damilag, Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon, was instrumental in helping young individuals involved in gangs, especially those already identified in the local police records as Children In Conflict with the Law (CICL) and Children At Risk (CAR). This program was collaboratively developed and implemented by the BCPC Office of Barangay Damilag and the SK Damilag in partnership with the Pag-amuma Ginhawa Extension of Northern Bukidnon State College. The primary objective was to understand the motivations behind the children’s affiliation with violent, unregulated gangs and to foster their positive development. We adopted a Design Thinking approach in solving this community problem. Design Thinking is a practical problem-solving approach that actively involves its participants.

Approximately 60-70 children and adolescents engaged in gang-related activities, along with their parents or guardians, voluntarily took part in the initiative. The intervention spanned three months and was supplemented by a series of aftercare sessions. Three months after the intervention, surveys and an initial impact assessment were conducted, complemented by interviews with community members, event organisers, the Philippine National Police (PNP), and barangay officials. The collective efforts resulted in no recurrence of gang involvement among the graduates, as reported by the PNP and local residents. They also noted positive transformations, including the absence of violence during public events, following the completion of the intervention program.

Based on these findings, policy recommendations were submitted to the Barangay to enhance the effectiveness of GRIPP and to bolster future preventive initiatives.

Development of the GRIPP Initiative

From September to November 2024

Venue: Manolo Fortich Bukidnon

The GRIPP Initiative was an innovative program developed by Hon. Kag. Crisansel Floren, the BCPC/VAWC Chair, in Barangay Damilag. Through her leadership and dedication to public service, she established a partnership with NBSC through the Pag-amuma Ginhawa Extension to collaboratively address the priority needs of the Barangay. After presenting the GRIPP Program to NBSC PGX and evaluating it, the program was enhanced and prepared for implementation. The program was designed to be inter-agency and multidisciplinary, with participation from various local public and private sector agencies. Implementation involved collaboration between the BCPC/VAWC Office, Sangguniang Kabataan (SK), the Municipal Social Welfare and Development (MSWD) office, the Philippine National Police (PNP), local civic groups, the Alternative Learning System (ALS), the Barangay Environment Committee, and individual volunteers who supported the initiative. Pre-program preparations began in August 2024, with actual implementation starting in September. The enrollees in the GRIPP Intervention Program were introduced to the Juvenile Justice System and relevant laws. They participated in a series of workshops and skill-building activities, including First Aid training, various games, and community service projects. Parents were also invited to engage in a series of family systems workshops and seminars, which covered topics such as family counseling, emotional regulation, addressing generational gaps, responsible parenting, and financial literacy. Upon completion of the three-month GRIPP Intervention Program, a culmination event was scheduled to celebrate the enrollees’ graduation, which took place on November 8, 2024.
